One physics PhD explains her thesis – by drawing it!

Veronica Berns wrote a doctoral thesis in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her topic? Quasicrystals: arrangements of atoms structured like crystals – but with a few non-crystalline quirks. Her problem? None of her family or friends could understand what she was working on.

Berns solved that problem with a little creativity – she drew a comic book! Titled “Atomic Size Matters,” the book “depicts cartoons of Berns wearing various costumes and uses humor as well as simple comparisons to describe elaborate chemistry,” according to a profile in the Washington Post. We’re all about science resources that connect chemistry to real-world applications. Well done, Veronica!
