Explore molecules digitally with a Minecraft spin-off.

Whether or not there’s a Minecraft enthusiast in your life, you’ve probably heard of the wildly popular world-building game. As the top-selling stand-alone game of all time, it allows users to create, explore, and play games in virtual landscapes of their own devising.

Now, a team of researchers in the UK has created MolCraft – a version of the game that teaches students about biochemistry. Players can explore proteins in 3D, moving in and around them to learn more about their internal architecture, atoms, and chemical bonds. Clickable “treasure chests” contain more information and even quizzes so students can test out what they’ve learned. Anyone with a licensed copy of Minecraft can download the game for free.
