Women in STEM say early engagement is critical

How can we encourage more girls to consider science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers? Business leaders in scientific industry say the key is to spark girls’ interest in science at a young age. While 66% of 4th grade girls say they like science and math, only 18% of all college engineering majors are female.

Marillyn Hewson, CEO of Lockheed Martin, believes that “Sparking a girl’s interest in STEM at an early age significantly increases the odds that she will pursue a STEM career.” We couldn’t agree more – this is why CEF’s programs target students in grades K-8, before they’re choosing high school courses and future careers.
