Congratulations to Adithya Taire, Winner of the CEF Chemistry Rocks Lyrics Contest!
In honor of this year’s Chemistry Rocks theme, we gave students the opportunity to win $100 Amazon gift card and the chance for a chemist to virtually visit their classroom via a webinar we will facilitate. Students were required to rewrite the words to their favorite rock song to show their love of chemistry by using science vocabulary. We received many fantastic entries and in the end, chose Adithya Taire, 8th grade student from Ms. Sue Gerchman’s class at Clifford Crone Middle School in Naperville, Il. as our winner. Adithya would like to thank his mom for filming him and his brother for being part of the video. View the lyrics below.
We’d like to extend honorable mentions to the following participants:
- Claire Swadling, Mrs. Avery’s Class
- Summer Hauna, Ms. Chapman’s Class
- The Students of Ms. Howe’s STEM Class
- The Students of Robel/Murphy’s Class
Aidthya’s Lyrics
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
You know that their electrons are gone
That’s why they make very sudden bonds
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
You know that their electrons are gone
That’s why they make very sudden bonds
Welcome to the room of ions
Who are positive because their electrons one day,
Walked away
Just because we lost our outer shell doesn’t mean our properties change
From our metallic ways
You’ll never know if the ion sitting next to you
Has lost one electron or maybe even two
You’ll think how many oxidation states they go through
But after all I said
Please don’t forget
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
They conduct electricity and heat
They’re ductile, malleable, and shiny
We make many oxides very well
They take our strength and our shiny shell
Yeah, acid issues, and to mention
Making salts with us is their intention
We sit on the leftmost side of you
We have 91 of us sitting next to you
You’ll think how did I get here sitting next to you
But after all I said
Please don’t forget
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
You know that their electrons are gone
That’s why they make very sudden bonds
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
All my friends are metallic ions
Some of them are iron and boron
Why’d you come, they form ionic bonds
I warned you nonmetals to just get lost
Their exothermic reactions will bust
It looks like you have to bond with us……
The Chemistry Rocks Song Lyric Contest is for educational purposes in furtherance of CEF’s mission as a nonprofit organization to inspire our future leaders to pursue science-related careers and improve appreciation of chemistry.
